(Extremely Staind voice) It’s been a while…since we last heard John Boyega’s British accent, so it’s pretty wonderful to hear it again in the first teaser for Pacific Rim Uprising. You can catch a brief sneak peek of the Star Wars actor gearing up to report for duty in the special promo for the upcoming sequel, which debuted online following its premiere earlier today at Comic-Con.

While Disney might be holding back some of its best stuff for Comic-Con this year, that doesn’t mean there weren’t a few Star Wars: The Last Jedi teasers that they could share at this past weekend’s D23. Just yesterday, we were treated to a new featurette that went behind the scenes of the production; right on the heels of that comes these new character posters, a beautiful new mix of familiar faces and bright colors. It’s not exactly the brand new trailer that some were hoping for, but it should keep us occupied until the next opportunity presents itself.

It’s a tableau with which anyone who watches the news is all too familiar: police station, pair of white interrogators, terrified-looking black man. But it’s not from last night’s 10 o’clock broadcast — the year is 1967, and that’s Star Wars star John Boyega in the chair, fielding aggressive and leading questions from the stern officers. It’s a tense scene bordering on the sickening, and the trailer for Kathryn Bigelow’s supercharged period piece Detroit only get more brutal from there.

Every major historical movie comes with a choice. Do you go seek the true story behind the film’s events in an attempt to be well-read prior to its release? Or do you embrace your ignorance  —  albeit temporarily  —  in order to ensure the sanctity of the cinematic experience? It isn’t difficult to find in-depth literature about the film; Wayne State University Press recently re-released The Detroit Riot of 1967, a first-hand account by the former aide to the Detroit police commissioner who now serves as the Dean of Public Affairs at the University of Michigan. In many ways, Kathryn Bigelow’s Detroit seems to be setting a historical precedent for the abuse of power stories we see in every city across America.

In the second act of The Circle (a film so poorly structured that it feels like it has five acts instead of three), Emma Watson’s painfully earnest protagonist Mae Holland decides to go “transparent” and have her entire life live-streamed around the clock, save for the occasional three-minute bathroom break. Throughout these sequences, CGI text boxes appear on screen to display viewer comments in “real-time,” with half-baked thoughts ranging from “I just ate cheese from last year” to “My girlfriend dumped me.” Those comments, often irrelevant and ineloquent, are the only part of The Circle that feels remotely relevant or clever…or entertaining. The rest, like the titular shape, is hollow.

The violence and chaos of the Detroit riots in the summer of 1967 began early on Sunday, July 23 when the police raided a local bar. It incited five long days of police brutality that ended in 43 deaths. But there was one infamous and tragic episode during those five days that left three black teenagers dead.

For those fans of sci-fi and mechas and giant monsters, news of a Pacific Rim sequel was exciting, to say the least. Pacific Rim: Uprising is currently in production, and we’ve got a lot of cool costumes and ridiculously cool-looking sets to look forward to. Plus, the movie stars none other than John Boyega, who’s been making a name for himself in sci-fi ever since The Force Awakens after he caught our eye in British alien invasion film Attack the Block (which, if you haven’t seen, you should go find immediately). Boyega’s pretty excited about his new movie, as you can see from how many Instagrams he’s been posting. Today he’s shared another look at himself in character as Stacker Pentecost’s (Idris Elba) son.
