FX ‘Legion’ Won’t Feature Any Real ‘X-Men’ Ties, Says Noah Hawley

For all the excitement of FX greenlighting a TV series tethered to the X-Men universe, showrunner Noah Hawley has remained adamant that Legion would largely stand alone from Marvel’s mutant franchise. Now, Hawley claims Legion will be more Alice in Wonderland than Apocalypse, and may not address the character’s family tie to Charles Xavier.

Well, even the strongest may not have survived X-Men: Apocalypse’s meager opening weekend, but Marvel’s mutants will officially have a whole new proving ground on TV. FX has picked up Noah Hawley’s Legion for its first season, debuting a first look at Dan Stevens in the title role.

Now, showrunner Noah Hawley drops a huge X-bomb, as Dan Stevens, Aubrey Plaza and another Fargo alum have been tapped for the lead roles of Professor Xavier’s child David Haller, and support cast.

Yesterday saw a bit of bad news for one of 20th Century Fox’s X-Men TV series, as FOX’s Hellfire lost its showrunners, and now FX’s Legion has a minor caveat as well. Progress on Legion has advanced, though the series itself won’t be set in, or connect to the same X-Men universe of the films.

Following months of rumors, 20th Century Fox surprised X-Men fans twice-over with the announcement of both FX’s Legion, and FOX’s Hellfire adaptation of the famously sinister club. We’ve seen Legion making progress, but Hellfire may have cooled, now that executive producers Evan Katz and Manny Coto have jumped ship to FOX’s 24: Legacy, among others.
