Even New York Comic-Con couldn’t lift the veil of secrecy around FX’s X-Men series Legion, only showing attendees a portion of the pilot, but we’re getting closer. Not only is there a new trailer for the Noah Hawley mutant drama, but also a clearer premiere date for early 2017.

The mystery behind FX’s X-Men adjacent drama Legion only rolls back so far with footage and panels from New York Comic-Con, and now another question mark has joined the cast. FX confirms What We Do in the Shadows star Jemaine Clement will appear in the new 2017 series, but in what capacity remains to be seen.

Marvel TV brought a heavy bag of goodies to Comic-Con 2016, including first looks at Netflix’s Iron Fist and FX X-Men series Legion, but will New York do one better? We’ll find out, as both series are due for panel treatment at New York Comic-Con 2016, along with Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 4, and some new goodies from Marvel Animation.

It seems fair to say that Noah Hawley’s FX-tinged take on X-Men series Legion will prove a bit more … off … than what we’re used to, and the promos are certainly capturing that. Following that incredible first trailer, drool over some new footage previewed during FX’s Atlanta.

By now, superhero TV fans are more or less used to series not maintaining much connection with their cinematic peers, but FX and FOX’s X-Men two-fer of Legion and an untitled mutant series sparks hope anew. To wit, X-Men director Bryan Singer says Legion could take place in the movie universe after all, while both “will relate to future X-Men movies.”

Despite unveiling simultaneously, FOX and FX’s X-Men TV series Hellfire and Legion arrived at vastly different stages of development, to the point Hellfire ended up replaced with a new X-series. Now, FOX explains the decision to cool Hellfire, identifying it as a show that “wanted to live as a feature.”

For all the excitement of FX greenlighting a TV series tethered to the X-Men universe, showrunner Noah Hawley has remained adamant that Legion would largely stand alone from Marvel’s mutant franchise. Now, Hawley claims Legion will be more Alice in Wonderland than Apocalypse, and may not address the character’s family tie to Charles Xavier.
