In a weekend with four new major releases but no definitive frontrunners, the Matt Damon sci-fi action flick 'Elysium' snagged the top spot over some seemingly powerful competition. Director Neill Blomkamp's film continues this summer's trend of R-rated fare opening big ('The Purge,' 'The Conjuring,' '2 Guns') and proves that there's plenty of box office success to be had in the typically slow final weeks of the season.
Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters
When 'Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief' came out in 2010, it looked suspiciously as if the would-be franchise, based on Rick Riordan's best-selling teen adventure books, was going to get 'Golden Compass'-ed -- stopped after one installment and left to languish. But the first adventures of title hero Percy Jackson (Logan Lerman) -- born to a mortal mother and the Greek God Poseidon made $226 million worldwide, never mind home video.
So, we get a second helping of Percy's adventures, which mix the home-away-from-home setting and grow-up-fast themes of 'Harry Potter' with some all-American gumption and a little Greek dressing on the side. With a new writer and director -- and what seems like a budget spent more on computer effects than human actors -- 'Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters' is exactly the kind of film that was made for me to take my teen and tween nieces to, not for me to enjoy. There's some bloodless peril, not even a whiff of romance and plenty of spirited action.
A new international trailer for 'Percy Jackson 2' has sprung from the depths of the web, featuring a look at the 'Sea of Monsters'' many wild set pieces, new characters and beasties.
Since we're currently stuck in a cultural moment where everything looks like 'Twilight,' 'Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters' makes us nostalgic for the time when everything looked like 'Harry Potter.' A new batch of posters for the Greek god-themed fantasy adventure have arrived. While they may not catch the eye of non-fans, they're sure to delight people already familiar with this series.
With 'Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters' only a few months away, it's time that we got down to brass tacks and started asking the important questions. Questions like "Was anyone, anywhere, actually looking forward to another 'Percy Jackson' movie?" Snark aside, the new 'Sea of Monsters' trailer goes a long way to justifying its existence by showing off lots of monsters. Lots and lots of monsters.
'Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters' is the second film in a franchise that arrived with a shrug back in 2010. Can it grab the audience that ignored the first film? Can it fill the void left by the insanely successful 'Harry Potter' franchise? We won't know until later this summer.
But hey, there's a new poster!
Demigod Percy Jackson and his friends must set out through the "Sea of Monsters" to acquire the Golden Fleece and save his homeland.
Though 'Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief' did not reach the lofty heights of the 'Harry Potter' series in terms of box office or cultural impact (which it surely strived for), it still made a decent $220 million worldwide, with another $37 million in DVD/Blu-ray sales. Hence, it's sequel time, and the first look at the film 'Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters' has come in the form of five new photos.
It's easy to see a release date move as just card shuffling, but a movie's success or failure is often linked to when it comes out. Would 'Battleship' and 'Dark Shadows' tanked as hard as they did if they weren't caught in the wake of 'The Avengers?' We now have new release dates for 'The Lone Ranger,' 'Thor 2' 'The Secret Life of Walter Mitty' and more.
