Though DreamWorks Animation has had some hits ('Shrek 2,' believe it or not, is one of the top ten highest grossing films of all time), their last film at Paramount ,'Rise of the Guardians,' was such a flop that it caused the studio to reduce ranks. Fortunately that may have just been some bad luck as their most recent film 'The Croods' is so successful that the studio has just announced a sequel.
You can't imagine two films more different than 'The Croods' and 'Olympus Has Fallen,' but right now the two of them sit on top of the box office chart, both temporarily linked by the fact that a bunch of people apparently wanted to see them this weekend. It's the first time in forever that two films have opened to over $30 million at the same time...but it wasn't golden for all of the new releases.
Much like the characters within the film, my attitude toward 'The Croods' evolved.
The first 25 minutes or so are awful. The uninteresting, darn-near-ugly character designs, dumb jokes and frenetic, boisterous action in lieu of ingenuity or thrills in 'The Croods'' first act is a chore. I was stunned to check my watch and realize how much left I had in the movie. “Man,” I thought to myself, “it's amazing how wretched some of these kids' films can be compared to something like 'Rango.'”
Then the bottom fell out (in a surprisingly literal way) and 'The Croods' transformed. “Man,” I thought to myself, “this is the weirdest, most adventuresome and gorgeous kids' film I've seen since 'Rango.'”
Can cavemen be adorable? Dreamworks Animation's 'The Croods' seems to think so, but the jury's still out on whether or not the result is cute or creepy. Anyway, first clip from the March 22nd release has arrived and it seems that awkward romantic situations were also a thing back in the prehistoric times. Oh, those cavemen! They were just like us!
'The Croods' is the upcoming DreamWorks Animation movie that answers the burning question: what would Nicolas Cage and Emma Stone look like as cavemen? Is that enough to get your interest? Watch the new 'Croods' trailer to find out.
One day, the curious daughter of a prehistoric family leaves her cave, prompting a catastrophic event that opens them up to a whole new world of bright colors and strange creatures.
