Even though he previously said he’d love to play the character until he dies, Hugh Jackman has recently maintained that The Wolverine 2 will mark his final appearance as the iconic character. After how pleased we were with The Wolverine, we’re hoping the sequel can provide a proper send-off for Jackman, who has just revealed the first teaser image from the film.

We were greeted with an unexpected — but totally welcome — surprise yesterday at 20th Century Fox’s Comic-Con panel. Hugh Jackman was the first to arrive on stage for the X-Men: Apocalypse portion of the evening, where he once again confirmed The Wolverine 2 as his last Logan outing. We weren’t expecting much in the way of news from the sequel, but then Jackman said three words: “Old Man Logan.”

We’ve been hearing for some time now that Hugh Jackman will be reprising his role as Wolverine for cameo appearances in both Deadpool and X-Men: Apocalypse — because how can you have an X-Men movie without Wolverine? The actor has appeared in every X-Men film to date, so it makes sense. Jackman himself has finally addressed the rumors, but don’t expect a straightforward answer.

Everything eventually comes to an end ... except in Hollywood, where an ending simply means another reboot is around the corner. So what are we to make of the new rumor swirling around the internet that claims the current X-Men movie universe will come to an end following the release of X-Men: Apocalypse and The Wolverine 2? If true, it probably means we get to look forward to and/or dread all of the recasting that will start to rear its head in a few years.

When the sequel to James Mangold’s The Wolverine was announced last year, writer David James Kelly was attached to the project. That appears to no longer be the case, as Fox has tapped Michael Green for screenwriting duties on the next chapter in our favorite furry mutant’s journey. It’s unclear whether Green will be starting over from scratch or simply delivering rewrites, but Fox is probably intent on really nailing this sequel, as it will be the last time we see Hugh Jackman portray the character on screen.

Recently, Hugh Jackman expressed a desire to continue playing Wolverine until he dies — or until Fox decides his time is up. It looks like that time is fast approaching, as Jackman himself has announced that The Wolverine 2 will be his final outing as the iconic X-Men character, although whether or not he’ll appear in X-Men: Apocalypse remains uncertain.

Starting tomorrow, audiences around the country will be able to see Hugh Jackman in Chappie, playing a former military man turned robotics engineer trying to produce a new human-piloted police drone. He sports a hideous mullet, spends most of the film sitting at a dreary cubicle, and generally behaves like a dope. So if you’re a Jackman fan looking for the guy you love in the X-Men and Wolverine movies, I’m afraid you’re going to have to wait a while longer.

Here’s a juicy tidbit from Professor Charles Xavier himself, Patrick Stewart, who’s currently promoting a new indie movie called ‘Match.’ Asked about his possible status for future ‘X-Men’ movies by The Oregonian, Stewart confirmed that it’s “very unlikely” he’ll be a part of the upcoming ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’ movie that will see young versions of the classic X-Men lineup (including Tye Sheridan as Cyclops, Sophie Turner as Jean Grey, and Alexandra Shipp as Storm) face off against Oscar Isaac’s Apocalypse. But Stewart did reveal that Ian McKellen’s Magneto will make an ‘Apocalypse’-tic appearance, and that his Professor X could be turning up in the next solo Wolverine movie alongside Hugh Jackman. Two weeks ago, we heard reports that Fox was developing a 'The Wolverine 2' with director James Mangold. This despite numerous reports from the summer that seemed to indicate that Hugh Jackman was done playing the character and ready to retire the claws after 'X-Men: Days of Future Past.' But, now Jackman has spoken out for the first time since those reports and it sounds like he's had a change of
