When the sequel to James Mangold’s The Wolverine was announced last year, writer David James Kelly was attached to the project. That appears to no longer be the case, as Fox has tapped Michael Green for screenwriting duties on the next chapter in our favorite furry mutant’s journey. It’s unclear whether Green will be starting over from scratch or simply delivering rewrites, but Fox is probably intent on really nailing this sequel, as it will be the last time we see Hugh Jackman portray the character on screen.

According to The Wrap, Green has come aboard The Wolverine 2 as screenwriter. The trade is referring to the film simply as Wolverine, and if that is indeed the new title of the project, it’s a solid simplification, in keeping with Mangold’s previous entry. Green previously wrote screenplays for Green Lantern (uh, yeah) and episodes of Smallville and Heroes, so he definitely has a background in superheroes.

He’s also writing the Ridley Scott-produced Blade Runner 2 from director Denis Villeneuve, and has a rewriting credit on Scott’s Prometheus 2, so apparently Scott sees something quite valuable in Green, and Mangold does, too.

The Wolverine sequel will mark the eighth time Jackman has portrayed the hero on screen — nine, if he appears in X-Men: Apocalypse as previously rumored. No plot details have yet been revealed about The Wolverine 2, so it’s unclear when and where the newest — and final — installment will be set.

Mangold was set to direct The Deep Blue Good-by starring Christian Bale (with a script from David James Kelly) before he got to work on The Wolverine sequel, but it was reported last night that Bale tore his ACL, resulting in a delay of that project. It’s not immediately clear if The Wolverine 2 will get moved up due to this development.

For now, the sequel is set to arrive on March 3, 2017.
