It’s officially 2016. Our Best of 2015 lists have all been published and the new year is upon us, which means it’s time to start looking to the future. Yes, 2015 was a particularly good year for movie fans, but 2016 looks pretty impressive too. You like Coen Bros. movies? We got one of those. You like Star Wars? Yup, one of those too. Critically acclaimed horror movies? Sure. Pixar? Of course. Movies where your favorite superheroes beat the crap out of each other? WE GOT TWO OF THOSE. We put together a quick list of the 25 movies — a mix of both blockbusters and indies — that we can’t wait to see next year. This will probably change as the year goes on (our 2015 list included Jupiter Ascending, Aloha and Tomorrowland so we’re not perfect), but based on what we know right now, this is it. Here are the movies we’re looking forward to the most in 2016, in the order of release date (those with no release date are listed in alphabetical order).

A new year brings lots of new movies to look forward to, like X-Men: Apocalypse, the third film in the current X-Men trilogy, which features both familiar mutants and new additions — like Olivia Munn as Psylocke, the sword-wielding super-villain who teams up with Oscar Isaac’s Apocalypse as one of his nefarious four horsemen. The actress has shared a new photo of herself in character from the set of the new film, standing amid a bit of rubble.

Now that we’ve all gotten Star Wars: The Force Awakens out of our systems (no? Still going?), we can look forward to some of next year’s major releases, like X-Men: Apocalypse. The third film in the current trilogy arrives next May, starring everyone’s new actor BFF Oscar Isaac as the titular villain, featured in a new piece of concept art along with three of his four horsemen and some very warped surroundings.

Like the trailer for Captain America: Civil War, the first trailer for X-Men: Apocalypse has a whole lot to unpack, from new characters to Oscar Isaac’s ungodly villain and his four horsemen, and yes, the bald-ification of James McAvoy’s Professor X. To help you digest all of this, director Bryan Singer has offered a breakdown of some of the bigger happenings in the new sequel.

Earlier this morning say the debut of the first X-Men: Apocalypse trailer and, depending on your mileage, it was either completely amazing or totally underwhelming. Well, if you needed a little more evidence before deciding what exactly you think of X-Men: Apocalypse, we know have the full poster, which gives you a bigger look at Oscar Isaac as the titular villain.

I’m an old enough nerd to remember when the first X-Men movie came out in theaters. At that time, comic books were not the number one driver of all things in popular culture. Bryan Singer’s X-Men certainly featured all the comic’s beloved heroes and villains, but there did seem like there was a concerted effort to tamp down some of their comic-book-ness. Everyone dressed in black. There was no spandex. The story was grounded in weighty real-world themes like prejudice and vengeance. It was the X-Men you knew, but watered down just a bit. It was a rum and coke, not a shot of gin. X-Men: Apocalypse, in comparison, looks like a bottle of Beefeater.

In a little less than a month we’ll be seeing two things: a new Star Wars movie and the first trailer for X-Men: Apocalypse. While it’s possible that we’ll see a short teaser-for-the-tease-trailer for the latter in the week leading up to its official theatrical debut, director Bryan Singer has shared a new photo from the film in case you were feeling a tad anxious.

Having a superpower would be pretty awesome for any of us to have, but that doesn’t mean that all superpowers are created equal. For every “faster than a speeding bullet” there’s someone like Chlorophyll Kid, who can make plants grow. James McAvoy is currently playing one of the superheroes with the best powers — the telepath Professor X in the X-Men movies — and was asked what he thought the worst superpower would be, and he quickly threw one of his co-stars under the bus.

Theaters tend to attach trailers to films that share their genre or target audience. It’s just good marketing — someone who’s just bought a ticket for Aggressive Action Movie A will probably be interested in a trailer for Aggressive Action Movie B, rom-com audiences want more rom-coms, so on and so forth. And so it follows an eminent logic that, as Collider has newly reported, the trailer for X-Men: Apocalypse will run preceding showings of Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Hugh Jackman has remained steadfast that the upcoming third Wolverine movie will be the next and last time he plays the iconic X-man on film, after sitting out the upcoming X-Men: Apocalypse.
