Sure, Community may have been canceled once, and seemingly bankrupted the streaming platform that gave it a second chance at life, and all its actors have moved on to … where was I going? Oh! Well, whatever Greendale’s future may hold, bid the Community gang one final (ish) farewell with the Season 6 DVD’s gag reel.
The dissolution of Yahoo’s “Screen” streaming service pretty-well confirmed that hope for Community Season 7 was lost (granted, costing Yahoo $42 million before that was a clue), but if anything about the erstwhile NBC comedy remains constant, it’s hope for the future. Official DVD art for the March release has arrived, teasing that Season 6 may not be the last after all.
In earnest, the last-minute rescue of Community Season 6 preceded immediate confusion that Yahoo even had an outlet for original content, let alone where to find “Yahoo Screen.” Now, the ailing corporation confirms that Screen is no more, in case you needed another gut punch that Community may have seen its last days.
Streets way, way behind. If ever we had doubts that Yahoo would continue Community into a seventh year after its Season 6 rescue from NBC, the Greendale Gang is going, going, gone now. A new report suggests that Yahoo’s venture into original programming lost the corporation an astounding $42 million, with Community and two others fingered as the culprits.
We’ve been through this drill before; one comment or another from cast and crew placing the future of Community in jeopardy, at least until another urges not to lose hope. That said, creator Dan Harmon now calls chances “bleak” after the comedy’s main Yahoo supporter left the company for another job.
We’ve momentarily let go of concerns that Community won’t ever get the chance at its long-awaited movie, but that doesn’t mean Yahoo lacks for new ways to enjoy the Greendale Gang. Season 6 is new once more, as Yahoo re-releases episodes with creator Dan Harmon’s commentary.
Few had earnestly thought Yahoo might order a seventh season of Community, what with cast contracts expiring and limited reception, to the point series lead Joel McHale even outright denied the possibility. Now, not only has McHale walked back his comments, but Yahoo is actively pushing for a movie, among other mixed outlooks.
The very mantra of #SixSeasonsAndAMovie seemingly guaranteed that Community’s recent Yahoo season would mark the last of the Greendale Gang’s episodic adventures, but one never really knows with Community. Still, the further away from the sixth season finale we get, star Joel McHale seems increasingly certain Community as a series has ended.
The cancellation of NBC’s Hannibal left us shocked, shocked (well, not that shocked), though given the climate of revivals and rescues, it seemed resoundingly likely the darkly delicious drama might find a new home. Now, series creator Bryan Fuller and producers are on the hunt for a new network, while long-standing rights issues with Clarice Starling may have impacted Season 4’s chances.
That old familiar standby of Community signing off has again arrived, perhaps a bit more under the radar than in previous years, but nonetheless completing the first half of its #SixSeasonsandaMovie pledge. Meta as ever, “Emotional Consequences of Broadcast Television” said a heartfelt goodbye to Season 6 as it envisioned a potential Season 7, but would fans (or Dan Harmon) even want it?
