Developed by Larry Gelhart, 'M*A*S*H' is based on the Robert Altman film of the same name and the Richard Hooker novel, 'MASH: A Novel About Three Army Doctors.' The somber theme "Suicide is Painless," by Johnny Mandel, was used for both the film and the more comedic TV series, which aired on Fox from 1972 to 1983. The comedic drama followed the personnel of the Army's Mobile Army Surgical Hospital and starred Alan Alda, Wayne Rogers, Loretta Swit, and Harry Morgan.
