Undeclared
Fox

Judd Apatow followed up his acclaimed television series ‘Freaks and Geeks’ (produced by Apatow, created by Paul Feig) with ‘Undeclared,’ a similarly — and tragically — short-lived series. This time, the plot followed a group of college freshmen struggling to navigate their new adult lives and all the friendships and relationships along the way. The show ended in 2002 after just one season, but found an extended life on DVD and helped kickstart the careers of Charlie Hunnam, Seth Rogen, and Jay Baruchel. 11 years later, we head back to the fictional University of Northeastern California and see what our favorite freshmen are up to now.

Then: Jay Baruchel, who had previously appeared in ‘Almost Famous,’ played Steven Karp, a celibate (not by choice) nerd who enters college looking for a fresh start and some real life experience … especially with the ladies, and especially with Lizzie.

Now: Baruchel reunited with Apatow in ‘Knocked Up,’ and has also appeared in the films ‘Tropic Thunder’ and ‘She’s Out of My League.’ He most recently starred in ‘This is the End,’ based on a short film he did with Seth Rogen called ‘Jay and Seth vs. the Apocalypse.’ He wrote and starred in the 2011 hockey dramedy ‘Goon,’ and can be seen next in the ‘RoboCop’ remake.

Carla Gallo, Lizzie Exley

Then: Carla Gallo played Lizzie Exley, Steven’s neurotic and high-maintenance love interest. Lizzie has a hard time breaking it off with her boyfriend from back home (played by Jason Segel).

Now: Gallo appeared in Apatow’s ‘The 40 Year Old Virgin’ and in ‘Superbad,’ co-written by and starring her ‘Undeclared’ co-star Seth Rogen. She has a recurring role on ‘Californication’ and ‘Bones,’ and has appeared on ‘Mad Men’ and the comedy web series ‘Burning Love.’

Charlie Hunnam, Lloyd Haythe

Then: Charlie Hunnam played Lloyd Haythe, a British theater major and close friend of Steven’s. Lloyd is quite the ladies’ man and always makes Steven leave the room so he can hook up with women.

Now: Hunnam currently stars on the FX drama ‘Sons of Anarchy‘ and was recently cast as Christian Grey in the upcoming ‘50 Shades of Grey‘ movie, based on the steamy novel of the same name. He’s also appeared in ‘Pacific Rim’ and ‘Deadfall.’ Like co-stars Baruchel and Rogen, Hunnam credits Apatow with giving him his big Hollywood break, but unlike his co-stars, he’s yet to appear in any of Apatow’s other projects.

Monica Keena, Rachel Lindquist

Fox/Getty Images

Then: Former ‘Dawson’s Creek’ star Monica Keena played Rachel Lindquist, who begins college as a homesick good girl, but eventually opens up and parties with her new friends.

Now: Keena has appeared in the films ‘The Devil’s Advocate’ and ‘Freddy vs. Jason,’ and is playing Lynette “Squeaky” Fromme in the upcoming film ‘Manson Girls,’ based on infamous psychopath Charles Manson and his gang of killer hippies.

Christina Payano, Tina Ellroy

Fox/Getty Images

Then: Christina Payano played Tina Ellroy, a new suite for Lizzie and Rachel. Her character was introduced mid-season.

Now: Around the same time, Payano had guest-starred on ‘ER’ and ‘Judging Amy.’ After ‘Undeclared’ ended, Payano disappeared from show business, though she did reunite with the cast during a special PaleyFest event in 2011.

Seth Rogen, Ron Garner

Fox/Getty Images

Then: Seth Rogen previously starred on Apatow’s ‘Freaks and Geeks.’ On ‘Undeclared’ he played the beer-drinking, laid-back Canadian Ron Garner, a business major with a dry sense of humor.

Now: Rogen appeared in Apatow’s ‘The 40 Year Old Virgin,’ ‘Knocked Up,’ and ‘Funny People,’ and recently co-wrote and starred in ‘This is the End’ with former ‘Undeclared’ star and real-life friend Jay Baruchel. He has guest-starred on ‘The League,’ ‘The Mindy Project,’ and ‘Arrested Development,’ and can be seen next alongside Zac Efron in the comedy ‘The Neighbors.’

Timm Sharp, Marshall Nesbitt

Fox/Getty Images

Then: One of Timm Sharp’s first roles was playing Marshall on ‘Undeclared.’ Marshall’s parents think he’s a business major, but he switched to music at the last minute. He’s one of Steven’s suitemates and has a crush on Rachel.

Now: Sharp has had recurring roles on ‘Six Feet Under,’ ”Til Death,’ and more recently, ‘Enlightened.’ He has appeared in the films ‘Imagine That’ and ‘Beneath the Harvest Sky.’

Loudon Wainwright III, Hal Karp

Fox/Getty Images

Then: Actor and musician Loudon Wainwright III played Steven’s overbearing father, Hal. Hal experiences a mid-life crisis when he divorces Steven’s mom and starts hanging around his son’s campus a little too much.

Now: Wainwright III has released 22 studio albums and appeared in the Judd Apatow films ‘The 40 Year Old Virgin’ and ‘Knocked Up.’ He recently guest-starred on ‘Parks and Recreation’ and ‘Person of Interest,’ and appeared in the Mike Birbiglia film ‘Sleepwalk with Me.’
