A Westworld renewal seems inevitable, what with writers already breaking Season 2, and all manner of fan theories fueling interest in Season 1. On that note, HBO boss Casey Bloys explains both the holdup on a renewal, and whether all the conspiracy theorists are on to something that Season 1 will actually answer.

Bloys spoke to Variety in the wake of AT&T becoming HBO’s new overseer, something not expected to impact the premium cabler’s operation in any visible way. At least with regard to Westworld’s likely renewal, Bloys offered that they’re waiting for “a very complete picture of the ratings,” as well as the actual Season 2 pitch from producers.

So what of Season 1, then, and all the madcap speculation that has viewers predicting 30-year narratives, secret identities and faraway destinations? Bloys obviously appreciates fans engaging with the series, but warned that the mysteries resolved in Season 1 might be more “satisfaction” than “answers”:

I think questions will be answered. I love reading the fan theories online. I think it’s great the way people have engaged. I’m just pleased to see the reception from an engagement point of view, and that it has started all of these conversations. I think people will get the answers they’re looking for by the end of Season One. A lot of the ones that people are buzzing about. […]

There are a lot of theories out there, and with some of them, I’ve been very impressed with how they’ve constructed the guesses. I’ll just say, they’re getting close … From a mystery point of view and a story point of view, I think you will get — I don’t know if “answers” is the right word, but maybe it’s “satisfaction.”

Westworld producers Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy already have in mind as far as five seasons, while this Sunday will see the series airing its fifth episode, “Contrapasso.” Check out the trailer below, and stay tuned.
