Though he's been adept in all genres, it's worth noting that Will Smith has had some of his biggest hits while making genre films, specifically science fictions movies. Perhaps that's why he's circling the lead role in Universal's 'Brilliance.'

This news comes from The Wrap, and they note that the script was written by David Koepp, and is to be directed by Julius Onah, who is working on 'God's Particle' but has yet to helm a studio picture. The film would be based on the book by Marcus Sakey, which would follow Smith's Nick Cooper, who is a federal agent and also a "Brilliant," which is the name for the one percent of the population that have super powers.  As the synopsis of the book reveals "Cooper has gifts rendering him exceptional at hunting terrorists. His latest target may be the most dangerous man alive, a brilliant drenched in blood and intent on provoking civil war."

If true, this means that Smith is collecting genre films to make as he's also flirted with starring in 'Selling Time.' And though Smith's last sci-fi venture 'After Earth' was a box office disappointment, Smith -- between 'Independence Day' and the 'Men in Black' franchise -- has had a number of his biggest hits in this genre, so after a high profile miss, this seems to be his comfort zone.
