Will Smith Reportedly Sought to Play Guy Who Throws Boomerangs in 'Suicide Squad'

Warner Bros.' elaborate plan to build a cinematic universe of DC Comics movies begins with 2016's 'Batman vs. Superman.' With Batman and Superman (and Wonder Woman and the Invisible Man; they may not mention him, but trust me, he'll be in the background) all in one film, that should be a box-office slam dunk. The real test comes later that year, when Warner Bros. will release 'Suicide Squad.' It's based on a darker and less well-known comic about a bunch of super-villains working for the U.S. government on dangerous missions in exchange for commuted sentences. Supposedly Jesse Eisenberg's Lex Luthor will go directly from 'Batman vs. Superman' into 'Suicide Squad' but the rest of the cast remains up for speculation and rumor. There are lists of characters (Deadshot, Harley Quinn) and lists of actors (Will Smith, Tom Hardy, Margot Robbie), but it's still not entirely clear who will play what.

Variety "sources" say that 'Terminator Genisys' star Jai Courtney is up for the role of Deadshot (psychotic assassin and frequent Batman nemesis), while Robbie is up for Harley Quinn (Joker's Joker-y girlfriend), and Hardy is in the running for Rick Flag (vaguely patriotic hero dude). As Variety tells it, "it's uncertain which character [Smith] will play, but sources say it's likely the Flash nemesis Digger Harkness a.k.a. Captain Boomerang." (See incredibly realistic artist rendering above.) There's not a ton you need to know about the character, a longtime fixture in the 'Suicide Squad' comics. Basically he's a thief who throws boomerangs. 'Nuff said.

If you've got a budding action franchise, and Will Smith is interested in appearing in it, you back up the Brink's truck and give him whatever he wants. But is what Will Smith wants really to play a guy named Captain Boomerang? I mean if you were Will Smith, super-cool dude who's played world-savers on numerous occasions, would you want to play Captain Boomerang? I've got nothing—and I mean nothing—going for me, and I feel like it would take a lot of convincing to make me play a guy whose claim to fame is he bonks people on the noggin with boomerangs. But maybe tens of millions of dollars qualifies as "a lot of convincing."

With or without Will Smith as Captain Boomerang, 'Suicide Squad' opens on August 5, 2016.
