Hugh Jackman Reveals Wolverine Almost Had a Cameo in ‘Spider-Man’ Movie

Hugh Jackman really wants a Marvel crossover to happen. He’s previously said that he has spoken to Marvel to talk about the possibility of a crossover event and how he wants to kick Iron Man’s ass. Now, he’s revealed a new wrinkle: he actually did convince Marvel to let him cameo in the ‘Spider-Man’ movie, but it fell apart at the last second.

Jackman spoke with Huffington Post at the Toronto Film Festival and revealed that there were early plans to have the Marvel movies crossover, even in the most basic way, but a simple wardrobe malfunction derailed the whole thing.

In the first ‘Spider-Man’ — Kevin Feige reminded me of this — we really tried to get me to come on and do something, whether it was a gag or just to walk through the shot or something. The problem was, we couldn’t find the suit. The suit was stuck in some thing. And so when they were in New York when I was there, we couldn’t get it together.

Keep in mind, this is for Sam Raimi‘s ‘Spider-Man,’ which hit theaters in 2002, just two years after the original ‘X-Men’ movie was released and before Hugh Jackman was a huge star. It was also at the very beginning of the superhero movie craze, so imagine how the entire landscape could’ve changed if the original ‘Spider-Man’ movie also had Wolverine in it? Maybe those kinds of cameos would be the new “thing” instead of post-credit scenes?

But, in reality, it’s not likely to happen any time soon. As Jackman explained about the complexities of getting these characters together, “Someone reminded that the amount of money Fox paid compared to the amount of money Disney paid is very different. So how you split that pie up?”

With the complicated financials involved, we can’t imagine Sony or Fox lending any of their Marvel characters to each other, or back to Marvel, for free. But, at some point, everyone will agree that this is too financially lucrative for all parties to keep passing up and one day (one day!), we’ll get our Marvel movie crossover.
