The Hollywood Reporter calls it “Godzilla meets Lost in Translation.” That gives me images of a giant Bill Murray demolishing Tokyo, but no, apparently there are no oversized Ghostbusters in the film, which is titled Colossal. Instead, Anne Hathaway is “set to star” in the project, which will be written and directed by Timecrimes and Open Windows filmmaker Nacho Vigalondo. Here’s the plot description:

Hathaway will play Gloria, an ordinary woman who, after losing her job and her fiancé, decides to leave her life in New York to move back to her hometown. But when news reports surface that a giant lizard is destroying the city of Tokyo, Gloria gradually comes to realize that she is strangely connected to these far-off events via the power of her mind. In order to prevent further destruction, Gloria needs to determine why her seemingly insignificant existence has such a colossal effect on the fate of the world.

So if I have this right, Gloria’s moods get psychically projected in the form of dinosaurs? Does that mean if she’s having a really good day — like she has an awesome sandwich at the bagel store — then that gets psychically projected in the form of really adorable puppies or something? I don’t know the rules of psychic Godzillas. For his part, Vigalondo told THR that Colossal is his “most ambitious script so far, and probably also the most personal one.”

Voltage Pictures is financing Colossal; they’ll be looking for buyers for the film at this week’s Cannes Film Festival.
