There was no jocularity on Baywatch when I was a child. These brave men and women in red bathing suits were doing very serious things, like guarding lives, performing CPR, running in slow-motion, and occasionally starting totally random spinoff shows featuring sea monsters.

The new Baywatch movie, directed by Horrible Bosses’ Seth Gordon, is a new breed of ‘watch. These guys do joke around, constantly. It’s Dwayne Johnson and Zac Efron as mismatched partners on the lifeguard scene, mocking one another’s testicles, performing highly unprofessional autopsies (seriously, guys, this is no way to treat a corpse), and even arguing over severed limbs. Again: This is not your Hasselhoff’s Baywatch.

Here’s the official plot synopsis:

BAYWATCH follows devoted lifeguard Mitch Buchannon (Johnson) as he butts heads with a brash new recruit (Efron). Together, they uncover a local criminal plot that threatens the future of the Bay. The film stars Dwayne Johnson, Zac Efron, Priyanka Chopra, Alexandra Daddario, Jon Bass, Kelly Rohrbach, and Ilfenesh Hadera. Directed by Seth Gordon.

Loathe as I am to give marketing any kudos whatsoever, I also give credit where credit is due. And in this case, I must state clearly and for the record that using “Get Rocked” and “Get Ef’d” as a kind of dual tagline is mighty clever. Kudos, tagliners. You have done your duty today. Enjoy your respite until this movie is a big hit and they decide to make a big-screen adaptation of Baywatch Nights. Then you’ll really have your work cut out for you.

Baywatch opens in theaters on May 25, 2017.
