Starting today, audiences around the country can see Channing Tatum swinging his way through Hollywood history in Hail, Caesar! In a fortuitous bit of timing, it’s just been announced that his musical career will continue in the very near future. In the immortal words of Gene Kelly, the dude’s gotta dance.

The Hollywood Reporter says Tatum will soon team with Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who’s no stranger to singing and dancing on the big screen, for an untitled musical comedy that’s been acquired by Universal. Further details:

Gordon-Levitt hatched the idea with Michael Bacall, who will now write the script ... Details are being kept under the tap shoes but it is described as an R-rated musical comedy featuring two pilots on a misadventure.

Okay so just imagine those sailors with aviator shades on. Basically the same thing.

Tatum hasn’t done much onscreen singing, but he sure loves dancing in movies, both with (Step Up) and without his clothes (Magic Mike). And JGL likes to hoof it too; he had a fun musical number in (500) Days of Summer and performs in his live hitRECord shows. The two should make a well-matched pair for a musical comedy, and in general it’s just exciting to hear that the musical might be making a bit of a comeback — and not just in the form of some Broadway show that’s being ported to movies like Chicago or Les Miserables. Viva original movie musicals! And go see Hail, Caesar! because that movie’s delightful, and Tatum is great in his scenes.
