In recent years, the poster designers of Hollywood have fallen victim to a viral case of Friedrich fever, aping his epochal painting Wanderer Above the Sea of Fog with their own designs. Everyone who wasn't too hung over to remember Art History 101 in college identified the classical influence on the one-sheet for Star Trek Into Darkness, which sees a shrouded figure gazing out over a wreckage strewn wasteland in place of a churning tempest. And back in summer 2013, the eminently similar poster for After Earth placed the character very seriously named Cypher Raige atop a massive spacecraft in a similar position. Today, that illustrious genre gains yet another entry, courtesy of none other than Christopher Nolan.

The first poster for Nolan's forthcoming WWII epic Dunkirk has arrived, and art history students can flex all on it by quickly identifying the Friedrichian makeup of the soldier's placement among the helmets as violent waters mingle with flame before him. In the film, Allied soldiers band together for the evacuation of the war-torn Dunkirk region of France, enduring enemy attacks and heavy casualties in the pursuit to protect innocent life. A new feature from Nolan is cause for hubbub all on its own, but the details that have trickled out from the production — shot on sweeping 65mm film by Interstellar cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema! and oh man, that teaser! — promise a spectacle of the first order. One of the biggest-ticket releases slated for 2017, the poster reminds us that Dunkirk is one to keep an eye on in the months to come. (Particularly on Friday, when an extended preview of the film will screen before select IMAX showings of Rogue One.)
