‘Moonbase 8’ Photo Reveals First Look at A24’s New Comedy Series From ‘Portlandia’ Team
Listen, I don’t need to even know that A24 is behind Moonbase 8 to be insanely excited for it. A new TV series from Portlandia co-creators Fred Armisen and Jonathan Krisel, starring Armisen, John C. Reilly and Tim Heidecker as astronauts? WHEN CAN I WATCH?! Having one of the most acclaimed film distributors involved is just an added bonus.
A24 has revealed the first photo from Moonbase 8, offering a first look at Reilly, Heidecker and Armisen as a trio of astronauts:
The studio behind awards season hits and acclaimed indies like Moonlight, Lady Bird and Under the Skin isn’t exactly known for their television projects, but Moonbase 8 isn’t their first: They also backed Channing Tatum and Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s Amazon series Comrade Detective.
Moonbase 8 is set at NASA’s Moon Base Simulator, and stars the hilarious trio as astronauts who aren’t exactly the cream of the crop. The series follows their efforts as they try to qualify for an actual moon mission. Reilly and Heidecker have frequently collaborated on various Adult Swim projects with Eric Wareheim, including Tim and Eric and Check It Out!, and most recently on Tim and Eric’s Bedtime Stories.
Little is known about Moonbase 8’s style and tone, but as a fan of all involved, I’m stoked to see how all these guys combine the comedic sensibilities we’ve enjoyed in everything from Portlandia to the aforementioned Adult Swim oddities. Moonbase 8 does not currently have a network to call home, but I doubt they’ll have a hard time figuring that one out. IFC, Adult Swim, and Amazon all seem like viable possibilities.
