‘The Grand Budapest Hotel’ Wins Golden Globe For Best Motion Picture (Musical or Comedy)

When the Golden Globes handed out their Best Picture award for the finest musical and/or comedy of 2014, they chose ‘The Grand Budapest Hotel,’ Wes Anderson’s story of legendary concierge Gustave H, at the titular hotel. With an all-star cast that also included Ralph Fiennes, Owen Wilson, Jeff Goldblum, F. Murray Abraham, Harvey Keitel, Edward Norton and Bill Murray, ‘The Grand Budapest Hotel’ was considered a longshot for the award from the start, especially after Michael Keaton took home the Best Actor trophy for 'Birdman’.

To take the top comedy prize of the evening, ‘Grand Budapest’ had to beat out four other well-respected films: ‘Pride,’ a feel-good British comedy about an alliance between miners and LGBT activists; ‘St. Vincent,’ with Bill Murray as an aging, boozing veteran; ‘Into the Woods,’ the adaptation of the Stephen Sondheim musical; and ‘Birdman’ from director Alejandro G. Iñárritu. If we had a vote, it would have gone to ‘Grand Budapest.’ We don’t (apparently the fascists at the Hollywood Foreign Press Association don’t consider Brooklyn a foreign country), but somehow our voice was heard. Will this win help 'Grand Budapest' be a major player at the upcoming 2015 Academy Awards? We'll find out on ABC on February 22.
