The last time we saw Brent Spiner’s Dr. Brackish Okun, his body was being forcibly used as a psychic transmitter to convey the malicious intentions of the invading aliens in Roland Emmerich’s bombastic, semi-masterpiece Independence Day. And then his weak, human husk was thrown across the room and he died. But now, some new Independence Day 2 casting supposes that ... maybe he didn’t?

Joey King, who he directed in (the so great, and damn you for not seeing it)
White House Down, has joined the ensemble.

The Conjuring to
Oz: The Great and Powerful. She was even in the first season of FX’s sublime
Fargo series. She’s the goods. Hopefully,
Independence Day 2 will give her more to do than scream and run from aliens and explosions.

Spiner, on the other hand, is an unexpected and delightful surprise. Although best known for playing the android Data on Star Trek: The Next Generation, Spiner is a wonderful character actor and a hilarious Twitter presence. He’s worked steadily for the past decade, and it’s going to be fun to see him let loose in a huge movie once more. But how did he survive being manhandled by an alien? We hope the movie goes into needlessly deep detail.

Independence Day 2 is slated for June 24, 2016.
