USA’s Mr. Robot cemented its status as one of TV’s best with a drama win at the Golden Globes, but Season 2 still has a world of work ahead of it. Not only has USA firmed up a summer 2016 premiere, but cast and crew also offered details on the second season (and what we missed from the first!) from the TCA press tour.

You’re warned of full spoilers for the first season of Mr. Robot below, but thankfully, fans won’t need to wait abnormally long for another bout of surprises and off-center hacker drama. Arriving at TCA today, the cast of Mr. Robot affirmed that Season 2 would again debut in the summer (despite currently ongoing writing), while creator Sam Esmail offered a few vague details on the story.

For one, the audience may have been clued into the identity of “Mr. Robot” (Christian Slater) as Elliot (Rami Malek)’s projection of his dead father, but Season 2 will focus on managing that relationship, rather than concluding Slater’s role in the story (via EW):

There will be a lot more backstory that will be shown, the timeline will get a little clearer — not 100 percent clear, because where’s the fun in that? But a little clearer … It really is about Elliot trying to reconcile what this means in seeing Mr. Robot. The series is filling in the blanks of the past and the present of this character … It’s about a guy who becomes aware of this delusion he’s been having.

Set to direct all ten episodes himself, Esmail also spoke to his disinterest in “gotcha” moments, noting that the reveals of Elliot’s sister and father were well-woven into the story, rather than twists for the sake of twists. That said, the creator confirmed that at least a few aspects of the first season were less real than anyone might have realized, also confirming a reason behind the absence of Elliot’s sister Darlene (Carley Chaikin) from a Times Square hallucination of his family.

For those unaware, Mr. Robot centers around Elliot Alderson (Malek), a young cybersecurity engineer struggling with social anxiety and clinical depression, who moonlights as a cyber-vigilante hacker. He is recruited by a mysterious anarchist known as “Mr. Robot” (Slater), and joins his “fsociety” group in order to wipe out sinister international conglomerate E[vil] Corp. Already renewed for Season 2, the series also stars Portia Doubleday, Carly Chaikin, Martin Wallström and House of Cards alum Michel Gill.

Plenty more from Mr. Robot Season 2 will emerge as we get closer to a 2016 premiere date, but watch the original trailer below, and catch up on one of TV’s best new series.
