‘Spawn’ Creator Todd McFarlane Confirms a New Movie Is on the Way

With studios green-lighting every superhero property they can think of in search of the next big blockbuster franchise  —  just what the heck is a Max Steel anyways? — it’s kind of surprising that we haven’t seen a Spawn remake. Not only is Todd McFarlane’s character one of the biggest comic book characters to be created in the last twenty years, he is also one of the few prominent black superheroes (anti-superheroes?) to have already gotten his own movie adaptation. Diversity that comes with an R-rating? Just tell the suits that it’s Deadpool-meets-Black Panther and watch the dollar signs come rolling in.

Thankfully for fans of the character, it sounds like a new Spawn movie might finally be on its way. ComicBook.com (via Heroic Hollywood) got its hands on an exclusive clip of Spawn creator Todd McFarlane talking about the writing process for a brand new Spawn movie. In the clip, McFarlane confirms that the new movie will not be a continuation or sequel of the 1997 film and even shares some concept art for the new film. McFarlane also shares an update on where he is at in the writing process:

I’ve finished the script, and I’m in the process of editing. It’s 183 pages, and [producers] usually like 120. I still think it’s going to end up being about 140, because I’m putting in details for myself.

As the article notes, McFarlane had previously described his script for Spawn as a much spookier movie than the 1997 adaptation. In the video shared by ComicBook.com, he explains that his current script is akin to Jaws in how little he will actually show the title character, choosing instead to feature Spawn as a creature lurking in the background, always present but rarely actually seen. While that seems to run counter to the current trend of blockbuster movies  —  where spectacle is the most important component of your film  —  it could be a nice change of pace for those more interested in a horror movie with a comic book twist than the other way around.
