Christopher Nolan’s latest effort doesn’t arrive until next summer, but if a new report is accurate, then Dunkirk might be hitting select theaters a little early. As with Interstellar, Nolan shot his World War II drama on film, and rumor has it that the director is looking to repeat his previous strategy by releasing Dunkirk two days early in theaters equipped for 35mm and 70mm projection.

Although it’s merely a rumor for now, Indie Revolver’s report on the early release of Dunkirk is credible given that Nolan took the same approach with Interstellar. Like that film (and Quentin Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight), Dunkirk was shot on 65mm (with portions filmed in IMAX) and is meant to be projected in 35mm or 70mm. Nolan is notably one of a handful of directors still committed to using actual film stock, along with the likes of Paul Thomas Anderson, J.J. Abrams and Wes Anderson.

Dunkirk is scheduled to hit theaters on July 21, 2017, but according to the new report, the WWII drama will be released on July 19 to theaters capable of projecting the film in 35mm and / or 70mm. That’s not too early, but it’s an exciting prospect for fans of Nolan and physical film formats — not only might you be able to see Dunkirk a couple of days earlier, but you’ll be able to watch the best-looking version of it.

Dunkirk stars Tom Hardy, Cillian Murphy, Mark Rylance, Kenneth Branagh and James D’Arcy, and centers on the evacuation of Allied forces who were surrounded by Germans in France near the Belgium border during World War II.
