I want to believe in the goodness of Paper Towns, the new film based on the novel by The Fault in Our Stars author John Green — but it’s difficult because it kind of looks like another one of those Manic Pixie Dream Girl movies where a lost boy just needs the most magical, perfect girl to teach him how to live. It could still be cute, and judging by the latest trailer, it probably is; it’s just that we’ve seen this story a lot already.

What these Paper Towns trailers have going for them is that they remind me of The Girl Next Door, which in turn was inspired by John Hughes’ classic teen films — so that’s not a bad comparison, Manic Pixie Dream Girl or no. Plus, Nat Wolff and Cara Delevingne are so darn charming, even if they seem a bit old for high school.

Based on the best-selling novel by John Green (‘The Fault in Our Stars’), ‘Paper Towns’ centers on Quentin and his enigmatic neighbor Margo, who loved mysteries so much she became one. After taking him on an all-night adventure through their hometown, Margo suddenly disappears–leaving behind cryptic clues for Quentin to decipher. The search leads Quentin and his quick-witted friends on an exhilarating adventure that is equal parts hilarious and moving. Ultimately, to track down Margo, Quentin must find a deeper understanding of true friendship–and true love.

Paper Towns also stars Austin Abrams, Halston Sage and Justice Smith, and hits theaters on July 24.
