‘Rampage’ Trailer: Dwayne Johnson Wants to Save His Friend, A Giant Skyscraper-Climbing Ape
Rampage was the arcade classic where players took control of one of three giant monsters (a gorilla, a lizard, or a werewolf) as they bashed and smashed their way through the United States, demolishing one city at a time while fending off the military and occasionally eating people they found inside various skyscrapers. In other words, it was the perfect video game.
Translating that experience to a movie could be tricky though. The action in the Rampage game is repetitive and light on things like character and dialogue. There are no human heroes, either. The film version of Rampage seems to have found a work around by casting a human with even more exaggerated proportions than a giant flying wolf: Dwayne Johnson, who plays a wisecracking do-gooder who just wants to help his ape friend George after a mysterious gas makes him grow out of control. Then the two of them have to stop the other Rampage monsters from, y’know, rampaging.
This actually could work; the trailer looks like it has some potential. Here’s the official synopsis:
Primatologist Davis Okoye (Johnson), a man who keeps people at a distance, shares an unshakable bond with George, the extraordinarily intelligent, silverback gorilla who has been in his care since birth. But a rogue genetic experiment gone awry mutates this gentle ape into a raging creature of enormous size. To make matters worse, it's soon discovered there are other similarly altered animals. As these newly created alpha predators tear across North America, destroying everything in their path, Okoye teams with a discredited genetic engineer to secure an antidote, fighting his way through an ever-changing battlefield, not only to halt a global catastrophe but to save the fearsome creature that was once his friend.
Rampage opens in theaters on April 20.
