While out promoting Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 this week, Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige reiterated that the next two Avengers sequels are separate stories — hence the studio’s decision to nix plans for Infinity War Part 1 and Part 2. Instead, we’re getting Infinity War and Avengers 4, with the full title for the latter yet to be revealed because, according to Feige, it’s kind of a big spoiler for the upcoming Avengers sequel. Maybe Zoe Saldana didn’t get that memo because she might have casually revealed that secret title…but it definitely doesn’t sound like a spoiler, like, at all.

UPDATE: As always, James Gunn was quick to debunk the latest Marvel rumor. You can read his comments below.

But just in case, you may want to proceed with caution — potential spoilers (emphasis on potential) ahead:

Still here? While speaking with the BBC about her role as Gamora in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Saldana was asked about the cast’s involvement with Infinity War and Avengers 4. Here’s what she had to say:

We’re in the middle of it, I think that the Guardians just shot their part when it comes to Infinity War’s, like, the first part. And we all have to go back for Gauntlet later this year.

Saldana refers to Avengers 4 as “Gauntlet,” as in The Infinity Gauntlet, a comic-book storyline that will immediately sound familiar to many Marvel fans. In that story, the villainous Thanos acquires all of the Infinity Stones and creates a powerful gauntlet that allows him to control the entire universe like some demented space-god. Obviously, he uses that power for very, very bad things, like wiping out entire populations.

IF (that’s a big if) Saldana is correct about the title, it would imply that Infinity War, as previously teased, focuses primarily on Thanos’ quest to acquire the stones — and that his mission is successful, which means that the third Avengers film doesn’t end well for the heroes of the MCU. It also implies that Avengers 4 would explore what happens after Thanos assembles the Infinity Stones and creates his gauntlet.

Again, this is all a big IF. It’s quite possible that the “Gauntlet” Saldana refers to is simply the production title, and that maybe not even the actors are aware of the actual title. Given Marvel’s proclivity for secrecy and Feige’s assertion that the title of Avengers 4 is a spoiler for the end of Infinity War, this seems plausible. Then again, “Gauntlet” isn’t much of a spoiler to Marvel comics fans, but it might be for those who are less familiar with the comics.

James Gunn himself weighed in during an interview with Yahoo! Movies, where he said:

It’s not the title. My guess is that Zoe just misspoke. I’ll talk to Zoe today, but I would imagine that is just Zoe misspeaking and saying ‘Infinity Gauntlet’ instead of ‘Infinity War’.

If that’s the case, then maybe Saldana was referring to heading back to set for Infinity War reshoots — something that’s built in to every Marvel production schedule. Who knows.

Avengers: Infinity War hits theaters on May 4, 2018.
