Jackie Chan and Owen Wilson’s ‘Shanghai’ Sequel Lands ‘Napoleon Dynamite’ Director
Last year it was reported that Jackie Chan and Owen Wilson were still planning on teaming up for a third installment in the action-comedy series that began back in 2000 with Shanghai Noon. It’s been 13 years since the sequel — Shanghai Knights — hit theaters, but it looks like the duo’s goofy adventures will continue sooner rather than later (even though it’s already much, much later now).
THR reports that Napoleon Dynamite director Jared Hess has signed on to helm the new sequel, titled Shanghai Dawn. Wilson and Chan are still in talks to reprise their roles from the first two films, which — as the titles implied — saw the unlikely pairing of heroes tackle the wild wild west and the far more civil landscape of London, respectively. Plot details for the third film have yet to be released, but there has been talk in the past of moving the action to locations like Hollywood or Africa.
Like Chan’s similarly successful Rush Hour franchise, the Shanghai movies were a fun and silly antidote to buddy cop action thrillers like Bad Boys, pairing the iconic Chinese superstar with broadly comedic American personalities to (mostly) humorous results.
