Both Sherlock and Watson were dealt quite a blow in Season 4 premiere “The Six Thatchers,” so why is the world’s greatest detective the only one sporting a sadness beard? We may yet find out, as a full photo set from next week’s “The Lying Detective” sees the investigators reluctantly re-teamed to face a cackling Toby Jones.

The BBC released a full round of photos from Sherlock Season 4's “The Lying Detective” (playing on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s “The Dying Detective”), as John and Sherlock do their best to move past - SPOILER ALERT - the death of Mary (Amanda Abbington). Complicating matters is Toby Jones’ repulsive Culverton Smith, a ruthless media figure who seems every bit as intent on taking down Mycroft as his brother.

So reads the full synopsis for “The Lying Detective”:

In episode two of this new series, written by Steven Moffat, Sherlock faces perhaps the most chilling enemy of his long career: the powerful and seemingly unassailable Culverton Smith - a man with a very dark secret indeed.

Benedict Cumberbatch returns as Sherlock Holmes, with Martin Freeman as John Watson, Mark Gatiss as Mycroft, Rupert Graves as Inspector Lestrade, Una Stubbs as Mrs Hudson, Amanda Abbington as Mary Watson, Louise Brealey as Molly Hooper and Toby Jones as Culverton Smith.

We’re still no closer to understanding Moriarty’s posthumous return (there’s still season finale “The Final Problem”), but check out the latest Season 4 trailers below, and stay tuned for more.
