Script rewrites happen, especially on giant tentpole science fiction franchises like, for instance, Star Wars. Episode IX is getting an assist from Jack Thorne, who sounds like he should be searching for hidden treasure in the Amazon but is, in fact, a screenwriter responsible for the BBC’s His Dark Materials series and upcoming Julia Roberts and Jacob Tremblay movie Wonder

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Thorne has been brought on to work on the script, the latest draft of which was penned by Derek Connolly and Colin Trevorrow, who is set to direct the movie. There’s a lot up in the air about the final movie in the new trilogy — most pressing is how the story will deal with Leia after Carrie Fisher’s passing. Production, obviously, hasn‘t yet started on it, so it’ll still be a while before we find out anything else.

Thorne has also worked on Channel 4’s Philip K. Dick’s Electric Sheep, as well as a number of other overseas dramas and thrillers. Production on Star Wars: Episode IX will begin in January 2018. The film is set to hit theaters May 24, 2019.
