Suffragette doesn’t look like your average historical drama or biopic, even though it checks off a few of those boxes (heavily gray British period piece starring Meryl Streep) — no, this true story of the women’s suffrage movement looks intense and stunning, and the trailer alone is enough to make you want to get up and throw a rock through a window (because feminism, not because it looks bad).

Movies about women’s rights are as (sadly) relevant now as they ever were, and one of the most striking things about this trailer is the distinct familiarity of the struggle. But it’s how this movement inspires that’s most important, and the women in Suffragette are not going to keep quiet — in fact, they get downright rebellious and rowdy about it, and it’s totally awesome.

Meryl Streep (who will surely earn another Oscar nomination with this) and Carey Mulligan co-star in the film, directed by Sarah Gavron:

SUFFRAGETTE is a thrilling drama that tracks the story of the foot soldiers of the early feminist movement, women who were forced underground to pursue a dangerous game of cat and mouse with an increasingly brutal State. These women were not primarily from the genteel educated classes, they were working women who had seen peaceful protest achieve nothing. Radicalized and turning to violence as the only route to change, they were willing to lose everything in their fight for equality – their jobs, their homes, their children and their lives. MAUD (Carey Mulligan) was one such foot soldier. The story of her fight for dignity is as gripping and visceral as any thriller, it is also heart-breaking and inspirational.

Obviously, Suffragette will arrive just in time for awards season on October 23.
