Here’s a perfect way to get hyped for the upcoming Suspiria remake directed by Luca Guadagnino and starring Dakota Johnson and Chloe Grace Moretz: Take in a rare screening of an uncut 35mm print of the original Suspiria by Dario Argento, which will be touring art houses this summer and fall.

The Suspiria summer tour is thanks to the efforts of the Chicago Cinema Society, who “rescued” this print “from an Italian cinema that had closed down.” Apparently, the print had been sitting untouched in the theater’s storage for about 40 years and, “after a brief inspection to assess the overall condition of the print, it appears as if it had only been screened a handful of times at most.” Their post continues:

Once we had the print in our film archive, we then made a very careful inspection to determine which version of Suspiria we had obtained. We were stunned to find that the print is a completely uncut 6-reel print with a run time of 98 minutes in Italian language.

With the film reels’ contents confirmed, it was time to schedule a road trip. The pristine Suspiria print will play at New York’s Metrograph theater on July 28, followed by stops at Nashville’s Belcourt Theatre, Brookline’s Coolidge Corner Theatre, Seattle’s Northwest Film Forum, and Chicago’s Music Box. (There’s more info on playdates at the Chicago Cinema Society website.) Mark your calendars now; these kind of opportunities don’t come along very often (or ever, if the contents of abandoned Italian theaters aren’t occasionally catalogued). The Suspiria remake recently finished shooting; no release date has been set yet.
