How about some good news? While the fact that the next Hellboy movie we’re gonna see won’t involve either Guillermo del Toro or Ron Perlman, new director Neil Marshall (Game of Thrones) is on the right track to keep fans of the comics happy. He recently explained that his Hellboy will go hard for the R rating, and will shy away from too many special effects.

It was a bit of a bummer when we heard that Guillermo del Toro’s Hellboy trilogy was not to be concluded after all, and even weirder when Hellboy creator Mike Mignola dropped the news that the series would be rebooted, and stranger still when none other than David Harbour was chosen to portray the character. It stands to reason that del Toro and Ron Perlman are pretty bummed, but Perlman recently told fans that he’s fine with the reboot, and happy for Harbour.

The fate of Hellboy has long been trapped in development hell, boy. Franchise director Guillermo Del Toro and star Ron Perlman were both interested in another installment, but legal complications made that tricky, then there was scheduling stuff, then the studio was being uncooperative, you name it. Del Toro said it was definitely gonna happen, then that it wouldn’t happen, then that it might happen, then that it probably wouldn’t but hey you never know, then that yes, there absolutely 100% will not be a Hellboy 3. And he’s holding true to those final words, because there won’t be a third chapter of his Hellboy franchise — as the new one’s gonna be a [deep breath] reboot.

You’ll be hard-pressed to find better superhero movies than Hellboy and Hellboy II: The Golden Army, but don’t expect Hellboy 3 anytime soon. That pin in your balloon of hopeful enthusiasm comes straight from director Guillermo del Toro, who says that series star Ron Perlman has been a little premature with his attempts to rally fans around a third entry in the series.

Guillermo del Toro’s Hellboy was a modest financial success, but it did well enough on home video to warrant a sequel (albeit at a different studio). Unfortunately, the superior Hellboy II: The Golden Army opened the week before The Dark Knight swept the summer of 2008 off its feet and totally dominated the superhero movie conversation. The second adventure of Ron Perlman’s wisecracking demon-turned-superhero did okay, but a third movie never materialized a part three looks unlikely to this day. Just don’t tell that to Perlman, who is dead-set on making this series a trilogy and took to social media to enlist fan support.
