Michael Sheen and Toni Collette in 'Jesus Henry Christ'

This is the state of independent cinema. Talented actors like Michael Sheen and Toni Collette making something that looks a little cute, and little twee. Dennis Lee's 'Jesus Henry Christ' will hit theaters April 20 and now there's a trailer for this film, and a poster.

I like these performers, but the question is how cute the film is. Dennis Lee is the director, and he's adapting his previous short film. Lee's last film - 'Fireflies in the Garden' was made in 2008, but didn't hit theaters until 2011. Though it may have gone under the radar, he did get a stellar cast for the film, including Ryan Reynolds and Julia Roberts.

I like to be nice to independent cinema as a general rule, and films like this are often put together by hook or by crook. It's a scrapper's game to get a small film made, and they often get financed based on the talent involved. But watching this trailer, it reminds me just a little too much of the sort of films that emerged in the mid-90's that seemed to think that anyone could be a filmmaker, even if they had little craft or no story to tell. Hopefully it's better than that.
