The 'Terminator Genisys' trailer has arrived and if you had hopes that this would turn around your bleak view of this franchise reboot, you're going to want to sit down and take a deep breath before you watch this thing.

So...this does not look very promising. Slightly more promising than those horrifying Entertainment Weekly covers and the "motion poster" but that's faint praise. While it seems to be trying very hard to distance itself from the earlier films—look, it's the same characters, but they're younger actors!—it's also completely filled with callbacks to the previous films. The T-1000 is here (this time played by Byung-hun Lee) and so are classic lines like "Come with me if you want to live!" and, yes, "I'll be back." (The later of which is spoken by a silver-haired Arnold Schwarzenegger who then swan dives out of a helicopter.) Even the action sequences seemed cribbed from other, better films (see: the school bus flipped end over end).

If we must be positive, we'll say this much: Emilia Clarke is great. Not only does she visually represent what a young, alternate universe Linda Hamilton might look like, but she seems to fit in the universe they've created here. (We don't love that she delivers the "come with me" line, but that is neither here nor there.) This stands in stark contrast to Jai Courtney who, neither in looks nor attitude, resembles anything we know about Kyle Reese.

A little more on 'Terminator Genisys' from the official synopsis:

The year is 2029. John Connor, leader of the resistance continues the war against the machines. At the Los Angeles offensive, John’s fears of the unknown future begin to emerge when TECOM spies reveal a new plot by SkyNet that will attack him from both fronts; past and future, and will ultimately change warfare forever.

In addition to Schwarzenegger and Emilia Clarke, the film also stars Jason Clarke as John Connor, Jai Courtney as Kyle Reese, Matt Smith as Mysterious Guy Whose Identity They Won't Tell Us and J.K. Simmons.
