With the DVD and Blu-ray release of 'The Avengers' coming soon, we've been getting a preview of some of the extras that will be included on those discs, like this alternate opening sequence with a tone much darker than the one used in the finished film.

The video below comes from Yahoo! Movies and features SHIELD agent Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders) remembering the events in New York when Loki unleashed the power of the Tesseract. Hill is filing her official report and giving her version of the events, with a quick look at the aftermath in Manhattan. It's certainly nothing like the opening of the finished product, which featured Loki breaking into SHIELD and using his staff to control Hawkeye to help him procure the magical cube.

The opening director Joss Whedon ended up using is way more in keeping with the tone of the Marvel movie universe, so we have to say we definitely prefer it to the one featured in the video below. Whedon's good judgment never fails!

You can check out the alternate opening below and let us know your thoughts in the comments. Do you prefer this one, or the final theatrical version?

'The Avengers' hits DVD and Blu-ray September 25.
