There are plenty of contradictions in the new trailer for 'The Boxtrolls.' First, how could the title characters be so ugly but so cute? Second, how can environments that gray and depressing be rendered so beautifully? We've seen plenty of trailers for this film so far and each time, this thing looks a little more charming and the stop-motion animation a little more beautiful. Can this be the third winner in a row for the Laika animation studio?

Like the previous trailers, this one sells a tone rather than a story. We are introduced to the concept of "Boxtrolls," large creatures who roam the streets at night causing havoc and their legend is almost immediately torn asunder, as we see that they're actually small, goofy and very friendly monsters who look designed to win the hearts of kids. We know from the official material that the film is actually about a young boy who the Boxtrolls adopt and how he has to rise to the occasion to protect his surrogate family when a threat arises, but no trailer has actually shown this. Possibly because they think they have a sure thing without plot details.

'The Boxtrolls' arrives in theaters on September 26, 2014. Elle Fanning, Simon Pegg, Ben Kingsley, Toni Collette, Nick Frost, Jared Harris and Tracy Morgan have lent their voices to the film.
