‘The Hunger Games: Mockingjay’ First Look Reveals Julianne Moore’s President Coin
After the critically acclaimed blockbuster event of this past summer, 'Catching Fire,' the next installment, 'The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 1,' released its official first look. Julianne Moore joins the already star-studded cast, led by Jennifer Lawrence, as President Coin, leader of District 13.
As we know, 'The Hunger Games: Mockingjay,' the final installment of the beloved series, will be split into two films, and Coin plays a crucial role in both 'Part 1' and 'Part 2.' Speaking of her character, Moore says, "You don't know who she is because she's only spoken about from Katniss' point of view [in the book], and Katniss immediately distrusts her in the way that sometimes a young person will distrust an older person who's not familiar to them."
As for District 13, the District of Panem once thought to have been destroyed by the Capitol in the Civil Wars out of which spawned The Hunger Games, Moore says it "really looks like a bomb shelter ... It's all been built hundreds of feet underground, so it can withstand any kind of attack and detection. Basically the Capitol believes they've destroyed this District and that everyone is dead, but these people have managed to kind of eek out a living and take what little they have and bring it down there."
In addition to Moore's involvement, Philip Seymour Hoffman returns as Plutarch Heavensbee, thought to be a gamemaker but ultimately saves Katniss from the arena and whisks her off to District 13 at the end of 'Catching Fire.' The actor tragically died earlier this year, after nearly completing his work on 'Mockingjay.' Lionsgate plans to use CG recreation to finish filming his remaining scenes.
Elsewhere in our first look at 'Mockingjay' we see Jeffrey Wright return as Beetee, the technologically savvy tribute from District 3 who escapes with Katniss to District 13, as well as Woody Harrelson as Haymitch. Francis Lawrence (also shown in the photos below) directs the film, which also features the likes of Liam Hemsworth, Josh Hutcherson, Elizabeth Banks, Stanley Tucci, Donald Sutherland and Sam Claflin, as well as newcomers Natalie Dormer, Stef Dawson, Evan Ross, Gwendoline Christie, Patina Miller, Wes Chatham, Elden Henson, Robert Knepper, Michelle Forbes and Eugenie Bondurant.
