One of the most delightful (and most successful) films of 2014 was ‘The LEGO Movie,’ which offered directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller a world filled with creative possibilities. Two of our favorite characters in the first film were Wyldstyle and Princess Unikitty, which were the only two leading female characters. Not to knock ‘The LEGO Movie,’ but I'm just saying: based on the strength of those characters alone and the vast possibilities in the LEGO-verse, why not have more lady LEGO characters? Lord and Miller are aware of this, which is why there will definitely be more female characters in the sequel.

It's no secret that studios are recognizing the value of their female audiences, so it's great to hear that Lord and Miller are throwing some more female characters into ‘The LEGO Movie 2.’ The sequel was originally scheduled to hit theaters in 2017, but has been bumped back a year for the LEGO Batman spinoff (as if we could complain). Lord and Miller will return to script, although it's unclear if they'll also direct.

In an interview with the BBC, Lord said that they are definitely including more female characters this time around.:

It’s important to us that the movie plays broadly and that we inspire young women as much as we inspire young men.

And Miller added:

I don’t want to give spoilers but there will be more female characters and more female stuff.

Ooh! Mysterious “female stuff”! What could that mean? The female stuff comment is a little vague and could be taken out of context in a way that sounds slightly offensive because it sounds like they're saying there's definitive male and female entertainment. But with Lord's first comment, it definitely sounds like they have their hearts in the right place, and hey, everything is totally more awesome with more female characters.
