New ‘Transformers’ Franchise Writer’s Room Includes Robert Kirkman, ‘Iron Man’ Writers and More
A couple of months ago, we learned that Paramount, along with producers Michael Bay and Steven Spielberg, hired Akiva Goldsman to head up a new Transformers brain trust, giving Goldsman creative control over the future of the franchise. Goldsman has just put together the writer’s room for the upcoming sequels and spinoffs, and it’s…interesting.
According to Deadline, Goldsman has wrangled The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman, Iron Man writers Art Marcum and Matt Holloway, Pacific Rim 2 writer Zak Penn and Jeff Pinkner, who’s written for Lost and The Amazing Spider-Man 2. That’s a bit of a mixed bag, but each writer has one thing in common (aside from being your average white dude): they’re all versed in large scale sci-fi.
A little more background: Kirkman is best known as the creator and writer of The Walking Dead comic, and has written and produced episodes of the gritty AMC series. In addition to Iron Man, Marcum and Holloway wrote Punisher: War Zone and are credited with a draft on the upcoming Highlander reboot. Penn wrote Marvel’s 2008 Incredible Hulk movie, and has story credits on The Avengers and Last Action Hero.
Paramount gave Goldsman the keys to the Transformers franchise to spearhead future projects, including sequels and potential spinoffs. The producer, writer and director has a heavy sci-fi background, with screenplays for I, Robot, I Am Legend, and the Fringe TV series. He also won an Academy Award for his screenplay for Ron Howard’s A Beautiful Mind.
Transformers 5 is currently aiming for a 2017 release date, with Michael Bay likely returning to direct. As of now, no other details on the future of the franchise have been revealed.
