What.

Give Tyler Perry this much: The man is unpredictable. After carving out his own extremely lucrative and popular place in the world of indie film writing and directing his own melodramas and comedies, he’s spent more and more time in the last couple years building up his acting resume in Hollywood. He starred as the title character in the cop thriller Alex Cross, and gave a really great supporting performance as a sleazy lawyer in David Fincher’s Gone Girl. So how do you follow up that one-two punch of crime and murder? Obviously by playing a mad scientist who turns into a giant fly in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2.

Again: WHAT?

Variety says that’s the plan, with Perry “set to join” the cast of TMNT 2 as Baxter Stockman, the crazy techno-nerd guy who creates the “Mouser” robots that Shredder uses to attack the Turtles, and then later, yeah, became like a big mutant fly. As you do.

Perry was legitimately great in Gone Girl, and it actually made me pretty curious where he would go from there as an actor in other people’s movies. But I would never have predicted this would have been his next step, mostly because the first Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was so dreadful I hoped we’d never see another. No dice; the movie made enough money to ensure a follow-up. Megan Fox and Will Arnett are already onboard to reprise their roles as April O’Neil and Vern, while Stephen Amell (aka Green Arrow from TV’s Arrow) will join the Turtles’ allies as the hockey mask-wearing Casey Jones.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2 opens on June 3, 2016. Tyler Perry will be there. Please note the restraint and grace it took not to make a “Madea’s Secret of the Ooze” joke in this entire blog post. Note it, dammit.
