All eyes will be on The X-Files to deliver a strong finale of its 2016 revival, given its uncertain future, and uneven run to date, and “My Struggle II” is at least off to a good start. Less well-off is Mulder, who seems to have taken a beating in the first real clip from Monday’s mythology-laden closer.

E! Online abducted the first official clip from Monday’s X-Files finale (following the brief Super Bowl appearance of the Scully-centric opener), in which haggard-looking Mulder finally puts in an appearance from the first photos, but isn’t doing so well. At the very least, we see Mulder heading into South Carolina, which feels awfully at home with the alien events taking place there in the real world this weekend.

In the meantime, so reads FOX’s press release for “My Struggle II”:

MULDER AND SCULLY UNCOVER A SHOCKING TRUTH WITH GLOBAL RAMIFICATIONS ON THE ALL-NEW SEASON FINALE OF “THE X-FILES” MONDAY, FEBRUARY 22, ON FOX

The investigations that Mulder and Scully previously began with conspiracy theorist and web-TV show host Tad O’Malley (guest star Joel McHale) seem to have awakened powerful enemies. A widespread panic begins as people all over the country suddenly start falling gravely ill, and Scully must look within to try and find a cure. Meanwhile, Mulder confronts the man whom he believes to be behind it all, but another figure from Mulder and Scully’s past may prove to be the key to their salvation.

Guest Cast: William B. Davis as Cigarette Smoking Man, Annabeth Gish as Monica Reyes, Joel McHale as Tad O’Malley, Robbie Amell as Agent Miller, Lauren Ambrose as Agent Einstein, Julian Christopher as Dr. Oscar Griffiths and Aliza Vellani as Nurse Sandeep
