Teen Mulder and Scully Will Get Their Own ‘X-Files’ Origins Novels
FOX’s 2016 X-Files finale will leave us all in the lurch on Mulder and Scully’s future, so why not explore their past? Like, way past? That’s right, it’s teen Mulder and Scully to the rescue in a pair of 2017 novels, as FOX gets thirsty for that sweet, sweet YA money.
As outlined by Entertainment Weekly, January 2017’s The X-Files Origins will follow both Mulder and Scully separately by their own novels (no time-travel or backstory shoehorns here, folks), the Mulder portion of which will go by the title Agent of Chaos, and Scully Devil’s Advocate. Both are set in the spring of 1979 (in which Mulder is 17, and Scully 15), “when serial murder, the occult, and government conspiracy were highlighted in the news.”
Beautiful Creatures co-author Kami Garcia will write the Mulder novel, while bestseller Jonathan Maberry will tackle Scully’s half. Says Imprint publisher Erin Stein of the books:
When I watched the pilot episode back in 1993, I became immediately obsessed with The X-Files. As a die-hard fan of the show, the opportunity to work with incredible authors on original stories about these characters is a dream come true for me. Why did Mulder become a believer? Why did Scully become a skeptic? We get to tell those stories.
And the artwork:
Welp, it could be awhile yet before we know if The X-Files will continue in live-action, but could young adult novels reveal anything new about Mulder and Scully? Stay tuned for more.
