The notion of Life Model Decoys has floated around Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. fandom from the very beginning, whether as an explanation for Coulson’s return, or that of Patton Oswalt’s curiously identical Koenig brothers. Now that actual “LMD”s are in the mix, Season 4 will bring Patton Oswalt back to finally explain the difference.

Oswalt first appeared in Agents Season 1 as S.H.I.E.L.D. operative and base caretaker Eric Koenig, before the character was killed off by Grant Ward. The Season 1 finale threw a curveball by introducing Eric’s identical brother, Billy, while the second season showed us yet another Koenig played by Oswalt, Sam. Naturally, writers had their fun teasing a reason behind such identical figures, one which Entertainment Weekly says Season 4's January 31 installment will at last explain:

Titled “Hot Potato Soup,” the episode finds Sam and Billy being hunted down in a bid to get at the Darkhold, and only Coulson (Clark Gregg) and Co. can save them — but viewers may also get some long-awaited answers!

“Patton Oswalt returns as the Koenigs, and we finally reveal their family secret,” executive producers Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen tell EW.

In the meantime, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 4 will continue with “The Patriot” on Tuesday, January 17, while you can read our review of 2017 opener “Broken Promises” as well. Stay tuned for all the latest!
