Fans of Marvel’s ABC block took small comfort after the cancellations of Agent Carter and Most Wanted that Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. would at least return for Season 4, and ahead of tonight’s finale, the Avengers-adjacent drama has some big news of its own. Team Coulson will remain on Tuesdays, but airing in the latest possible primetime slot, and making some tonal changes while they’re at it.

Following ABC’s myriad cancellations last week, network heads released a new schedule confirming that Agents would move to the 10:00 P.M. slot on Tuesdays, following a two-hour comedy block of The Middle, American Housewife, Fresh Off the Boat and The Real O’Neals. Perhaps most intriguingly, the later timeslot will allow Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. to “go a little bit edgier, go a little darker and take some risks,” per network heads.

At the very least, Hayley Atwell won’t be too far from her former Marvel compatriots, as the network’s new legal drama Conviction has the 10:00 P.M. slot on Monday.

We’ll see just how much darker Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. goes in a fourth season, perhaps embodied by the big death planned for tonight’s two-hour Season 3 finale. We’ll be back with a full write-up as it airs.
