The past few weeks, Marvel’s TV universe has been abuzz with news of potential for an Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. spinoff, as well as a possible Ms. Marvel series. Speculation has run the gamut, but now it seems Adrianne Palicki’s Mockingbird and Nick Blood’s Lance Hunter have been chosen to lead the spinoff, giving us a good idea of its premise.

According to Deadline, both Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 2 regulars would lead the spinoff with a Mr. and Mrs. Smith-type dynamic, in line with the characters’ failed marriage and subsequent rekindling. It isn’t yet known what direction the spinoff would take opposite Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. itself, particularly if both run concurrently as planned, but Season 2's likely setup of either Secret Warriors or Avengers Academy comic storylines could certainly play a part, given Palicki’s Mockingbird character has a comic history with the “West Coast Avengers.”

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. EP Jeffrey Bell and series writer Paul Zbyszewski are currently spearheading the project for the fall, without the aid of a backdoor pilot, though a short promo reel or independent pilot have been considered. ABC wouldn’t issue a formal greenlight before at least seeing a script, while Zbyszewski is expected to serve as showrunner, if all goes according to plan.

Palicki and Blood have certainly ranked among the better-reviewed additions to Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 2, but could the two really lead their own spinoff? Will the “Real S.H.I.E.L.D.” be involved? How might Marvel or ABC look to differentiate the series from its predecessor?
