AMC has no end to The Walking Dead in sight, but – heading into an eighth season – we have to at least consider saying goodbye to some major characters. Andrew Lincoln knows exactly how he wants Rick’s story to end, and now recites the twist with gleeful detail in a new PaleyFest video.

You may have heard Lincoln describing his ideal ending for The Walking Dead, but it’s quite another to see it in motion. As the Love Actually star puts it, he’d like to see some far-flung season in the desert, wherein Rick sacrifices himself for Carl, but discovers a major twist in the process.

Here’s how IndieWire described Lincoln’s pitch:

“This is how I want Rick to die,” said Lincoln, eliciting gasps from the audience. “We’re going through a desert somewhere, and I jump off the bus in a very heroic act… I jump off and I’m kung fu kicking, earning my action figure. Half way down, I get bit. It doesn’t matter, I keep going. I’m just waiting to die.”

But then, Lincoln’s twist: He patches himself up, and then doesn’t die.

“The final shot is me going, ‘Holy sh*t, maybe I’m the cure!’ The final shot of the whole thing is a high shot of a herd of zombies coming. Rick gets up and follows the tracks to go see [his son] Carl. The herd comes toward him, and they separate.

Of course, seeing is believing, so let’s watch Lincoln describe it for himself (via UPROXX):

Mind you, Walking Dead bosses have previously spoken to an envisioned lifespan as long as the Star Trek franchise, so we may not see Rick’s grand revelation anytime soon. That’s assuming creator Robert Kirkman even wants to create a cure for the zombie apocalypse, when we all know the real Walking Dead … was love.
