The rich history of Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead informed a great deal of Starz sequel series Ash Vs. Evil Dead, though producers had earlier noted that rights issues prevented any formal reference to Ash’s medieval third adventure, Army of Darkness. Now, said legal red-tape appears to have been cut for Season 2, which itself will specifically reference the third film.

IGN reports that executive producer Rob Tapert acknowledged as much in a Comic-Con 2016 interview, following a Season 1 preface that Bruce Campbell’s aging lothario stockboy wouldn’t be able to mention events of the 1992 film:

We actually can reference [Army of Darkness], and we reference it in this coming season … We just don’t pull upon that universe, but this coming season Ash is able to talk about events that happened in Army of Darkness, although people are not likely to believe him, of course.

Granted, where Tapert previously called Ash Vs. Evil Dead a “slightly altered universe” after the events of Evil Dead 2, showrunner Craig DiGregorio later stated that Ash was still Ash, and only the separate studio behind Army of Darkness prevented any overt references, including the iconic S-Mart.

While we wait for October, check out the most recent Season 2 synopsis:

The second season roars back into action with Ash leaving his beloved Jacksonville and returning to his hometown of Elk Grove. There, he confronts Ruby. The former enemies have to form an uneasy alliance as Elk Grove soon becomes the nucleus of evil.

You can check out the full Season 2 trailer below, as well as the red-band, but will Ash Vs. Evil Dead Season 2? finally bring the whole franchise together?
