CBS’ Supergirl has maintained a notably odd relationship with Superman, over-alluding to him in the pilot without speaking a name, only to feature a faceless fly-by and emoji chat as early as episode 3. Now, the DC drama will take its next Kryptic step, casting a younger Man of Steel for an appearance that … might make your head hurt.

According to TVLine, has begun auditioning a younger Kal-El for Supergirl‘s thirteenth episode, hoping to find a 13-year-old actor with “future leading man looks” for the potentially recurring role. Said appearance has been said to “establish the cherished bond between him and Kara” via “a string of flashbacks.”

You know, except for the part where the pilot presented Kal-El as an infant and Kara an adolescent, subsequently establishing that Kal was already an adult Superman by the time his cousin arrived on Earth. Just, you know … the premise of the entire show. Maybe some timey-wimey shenanigans? Supes telling Kara bits of his childhood via emoji? Who knows.

In any case, having faced off with a bomber in this week’s “How Does She Do It?” (rescheduled from last week in the wake of the Paris attacks), Supergirl will next take on DC’s Red Tornado in Monday’s “Red Faced,” the first trailer of which you can find below. Will Supergirl conjure any other weirdly-evasive Superman cameos in the meantime?
