Just when you thought that the 'Expendables' franchise couldn't pull another action icon into its ensemble, Sylvester Stallone jumps on Twitter and announces that the one and only Antonio Banderas could be joining the cast of the upcoming 'The Expendables 3.'

Of course, you'll recall that Mr. Banderas made quite a splash in the '90s, playing a guitar-playing, machine gun-shooting badass in Robert Rodriguez's 'Desperado' (and its lesser sequel, 'Once Upon a Time in Mexico') and making a fine Zorro in 'The Mask of Zorro' (and, uh, its lesser sequel, 'The Legend of Zorro'). Although he continues to do fine work when cast properly (see 'The Skin I Live In' and 'Haywire'), the fact that his fifteen minutes as a leading man are long gone makes him a perfect addition to an ensemble that includes the likes of Dolph Lundgren.

Here's Stallone's Tweet:

If Banderas does join the crew, he'll stand alongside other franchise newbies like Nicolas Cage, Wesley Snipes and director Patrick Hughes, who has the task of making an 'Expendables' movie that's..well...good. This series has always felt more exciting in concept than execution, but with all of these new names being added to the roster, it may finally be just crazy enough to work.

'The Expendables 3' is being targeted for a 2014 release.
